Tianjin City Profile

Tianjin is one of China’s four municipalities directly under the Central Government, located in northern China on the northeast of the North China Plain. It borders the Bohai Sea to the east, the Yanshan Mountains to the north, Beijing to the west, and Hebei Province on the remaining sides. The city covers an area of 11,966.45 square kilometers and had a permanent population of about 13.63 million at the end of 2025.

Tianjin has a history of more than 600 years. The name “Tianjin” means “the Emperor’s ferry.” It was formally established as a city in 1404 during the Ming Dynasty and is the only ancient Chinese city with a precisely recorded year of construction. Historically, it grew as an important canal and river port where the South Canal, North Canal, and Haihe River meet. In the mid-19th century, Tianjin became a treaty port, and concessions were established by several foreign countries. This history left the city with a distinctive blend of Chinese and Western architecture, especially in areas such as the Five Great Avenues and the Italian Style Area.

Today, Tianjin is a national central city, an international comprehensive transportation hub, a modern marine city, and a major manufacturing and innovation base in northern China. It is also a key node of the Belt and Road Initiative, the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor, and the New Eurasian Land Bridge, and serves as an important gateway for inland regions in northern China. Tianjin Port is one of the largest comprehensive ports in northern China and maintains trade connections with hundreds of ports around the world.

The city is known for its rich culture and lively local life. Traditional folk arts such as crosstalk, kuaiban, Yangliuqing New Year pictures, and Clay Figure Zhang are important parts of Tianjin’s cultural heritage. Local specialties include Goubuli baozi, Shibajie mahua, Erduoyan fried cake, and jianbing guozi. Popular landmarks include the Tianjin Eye, Haihe River, Ancient Culture Street, Mount Panshan, and the National Marine Museum.

With its river-and-sea landscape, historical neighborhoods, modern industry, and open port culture, Tianjin is a city where tradition and modernity meet.
